In Spite of Everything, Life Has Survived

cretaceous-tertiary extinction event 1

65 million years ago the Earth was hit by an asteroid with a size of about 10 km. An enormous formation, the Chicxulub crater, was the result, which you can still see traces of in the Mexican Gulf. The catastrophe became global through the spread of enormous quantities of  dust and water vapour in the atmosphere. The tsunami waves must have been incredible. This extinguished many species, especially the dinosaurs. And the rest of us got a new chance.

Clearly, the subject of life's emergence and evolution is fascinating. Is the growth of intelligence an unavoidable consequence of Darwin's evolution theory or is mankind only the product of a series of coincidental events that could have had a quite different outcome?
